Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Vermont baseball team used a six-run inning in game one and a nine-run inning in game two to earn a sweep over Stony Brook in the America East Conference opener for both teams.
Game one was scoreless until the Catamounts (9-8, 2-0 America East) scored a flurry of runs in the third inning. Jason Carey had a base hit and then advanced to second on a Stony Brook error to get UVM going. An RBI triple from Ray Montanez sent the first run across the plate. A three-run home run by Nick Roberts and a solo shot by Barry Chamberland chased Seawolves starter Anthony Stutz from the mound. However, the Catamounts touched up SBU's Dan Hoffman for four hits in the fifth inning, leading to four more Catamount runs for the 10-0 lead.
The Seawolves (9-11, 0-2 America East) got a run in the bottom of the inning from Matt Devins, but Vermont tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 14-1. Stony Brook added three runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Mark Taormina and an RBI double from Rich Graham.
Stutz (1-3) picked up the loss on the mound, giving up six runs on five hits, striking out four and walking three.
Game two followed the same pattern, although a solo home run by catcher Ed Kull gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 advantage. But the Catamounts again exploded in a pivotal third ininng with nine runs on six hits, including the second three-run homer by Roberts on the afternoon. The second solo homerun of the day from Chamberland and a three-run double by Jason Carey again forced a Stony Brook pitching change as Will Brumfield entered the game for Kevin Willi.
The Seawolves slowly crept back in the game, beginning with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Kull hit his second homer in as many at-bats to cut the lead to 10-4. However the Seawolves could get no closer than the final score of 12-8.
Willi earned the loss for Stony Brook on the mound, allowing nine runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. Dwayne Whitaker collected three hits and RJ Etzel had two, while Kull went 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
Stony Brook returns to action tomorrow with another doubleheader against the Catamounts. Game time is set for noon.
