Stony Brook Takes Pair From Vermont In Baseball Sunday

April 7, 2002

Final Stats

Stony Brook, NY -- - Nick Theoharis drove in Dwayne Whitaker from second base in the bottom of the 13th inning with a double to right center field as Stony Brook (11-11, 2-2 America East) beat Vermont (9-10, 2-2 America East), 7-6, in a wild four-hour game one Sunday. In game two, the Seawolves erased a 3-1 deficit with a nine-run fifth inning and went on to a 10-6 victory for the sweep.

Vermont took a 3-0 lead in game one, scoring three unearned runs in the first inning. Stony Brook scored a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Andrew Larsen had an RBI single in the fourth, Rich Graham had an RBI single in the fifth and Andrew Zielinski added an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

Neither team could score in the seventh, but they managed to trade blows in each of the next two innings. Barry Chamberland hit a solo homerun off Jonathan Lewis to lead off the eighth. But Mark Taormina scored on Andrew Zielinkski's infield grounder as the Catamounts threw home unsuccessfully, tying the game at 4-4.

In the ninth inning, Jeff Barry hit his third homerun of the series - a solo shot to left field. Stony Brook's Matt Devins countered with a homerun on the first pitch in the ninth that grabbed the left field foul pole and tied the game at 5-5.

Again Vermont went on top in the 12th as Chamberland's sacrifice fly to right field scored Barry. Amazingly, the Seawolves had an answer as RJ Etzel hit his first homerun of the season to tie the game for the fourth time.

Relief pitcher Will Brumfield held the Catamounts at bay in the 13th inning and Stony Brook got the winning run across on Theorharis' double with one out. Brumfield (1-2) earned his first victory for the Seawolves.

Lewis did not figure in the decision, but was brilliant. He pitched 11 innings, allowing nine hits, two earned runs and struck out 10.

Zielinski went 1-for-5 in the game with a pair of critical RBI and finished the day with five RBI.

The Seawolves were down 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of game two, but hammered the Catamounts for nine runs to take control of the game. Devins hit his second homerun of the day to start the inning off. Zielinski's double to left center four batters later cleared the bases and gave Stony Brook a 5-3 lead. Lipschutz added a two-run single and Etzel an RBI single as Stony Brook sent 14 men to the plate in the inning.

Jamie Szwejkowski (2-2) went 5 1/3 innings to get the win. He walked five and struck out five, giving up five earned runs on eight hits.

The Seawolves defense - which allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate in game one - turned four double plays in game two.

Brumfield - making his second relief appearance of the day - worked 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a hit or run.

Stony Brook heads to Seton Hall on Wednesday before hosting America East rival Binghamton in a four-game set next Saturday and Sunday.
