Brooklyn, N.Y. -
Stony Brook (21-15) used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the St. Francis College Terriers (18-18), 7-5, at Keyspan Park. Nine different players combined for Stony Brook's ten total hits, and seven different Seawolves each drove in one run.
The Seawolves capitalized on four walks by sophomore Ed DeMarche to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Rich Graham led off the game with a single to center and Dwayne Whitaker followed with a walk. After a pair of fly outs, Lee Lipschutz drew a walk to load the bases. Rob Sandora then walked to force in the first run, and Ed Kull's single to left scored Whitaker, and Lipschutz was thrown out at the plate by sophomore Mike Molinini.
St. Francis cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth on junior Jesse Boles' leadoff double and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Joe DeSiena. However, Stony Brook scored twice in the fifth when Matt Devins singled home Whitaker, advanced to second on the throw to the plate, and Andrew Larsen followed with a double to score Devins.
The Terriers then scored single runs in the fifth, on an RBI single by senior Jason Iorio which scored freshman Anthony Delfaus, and in the sixth, when senior Vincent Sarrica singled home sophomore Anthony Giudice.
Nick Abel came on in relief of Ray Zimmerman (2-2) in the seventh and earned the save with three innings of work. The Seawolves padded their lead with an RBI double by Dave Mischo in the eighth, and scored twice on the ninth on RBI singles by Stu Juarez and Corey Johnson.
The Terriers rallied for two runs in the ninth as sophomore Steve Iannuccilli walked and Iorio followed with a double, after which both runners scored on consecutive groundouts, but that was as close as they would come.
Johnson was the lone Seawolf with two hits. Stony Brook is back in action on Wednesday when it host N.Y. Tech at 3:30 p.m.
