Lewis Selected America East Baseball Rookie Of The Year

Orono, ME -- - Stony Brook placed four baseball players on the 2002 America East All-Conference Teams announced Wednesday. The conference selected two teams of 11 members on each and a Rookie, Pitcher, and Player of the Year.

Freshman pitcher Jonathan Lewis was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. Lewis posted an 8-3 record with a 3.50 ERA and five complete games. He struck out 86 and walked 31 in 79 2/3 innings pitched. His eight victories ties the second highest single season total in school history while his 86 strikeouts is fourth in a single season. Lewis was also a selection on the All-Rookie Team.

Stony Brook's middle infield combination of Rich Graham and Matt Devins were Second Team choices. Graham - a junior second baseman - hit .288 with 10 doubles, two homeruns and 23 RBI. He also had a team-best 12 stolen bases and a fielding percentage of .938. Devins - a freshman shortstop - started in all 48 games and hit .307 with five homeruns and 29 RBI. Devins drew 23 walks and posted a fielding percentage of .925. He was also a member of the All-Rookie Team.

Dwayne Whitaker was also a Second Team selection. Whitaker hit .308 in 46 games, leading the Seawolves in homeruns with nine and RBI with 31. He did not commit an error in 48 attempts in the outfield. He hit .372 in 21 America East games with seven stolen bases.

Stony Brook finished the regular season with a 26-22 record and an 11-11 mark in the America East, making the playoffs as a first year member of the conference.
