BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont softball team snapped a 14-game
losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Stony Brook in the nightcap of an
America East doubleheader at Archie Post Field this afternoon. The
Seawolves rolled past Vermont 8-0 in the opening game of the day.
Stony Brook's Stephanie Poetzsch struck out nine Catamounts and scattered
five hits and teammate Jane Stein accounted for all of the Seawolves' runs
in the fifth inning with a grand slam home run to lead SBU past Vermont 8-0
in the first game. Stony Brook took an early 1-0 lead in the first and
added another run in the fourth to go up 2-0. But Stein's slam in the
fifth broke open the close contest. She finished the day with three hits
and four RBI. Kristen Brust also pounded out three hits and scored twice,
while teammates Mary Shea Carpenter and Stephanie DiBiase added two hits
apiece. Poetzsch (17-15), the America East leader in strikeouts, picked up
her 17th win of the season.
Vermont's Kara Massey (1-17) was charged with the loss on the mound, but
did lead Vermont in hitting with two base knocks.
UVM fought back in game two. The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom
of the third as Ashley Stebbins scored on Megan Long's sacrifice fly. The
Seawolves answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1
lead. In the bottom of the fifth, UVM strung together three straight hits,
including a double by Long, to drive in teammates Nicole Bouffard and
Stebbins and put Vermont back on top for good, 3-2. Vermont added another
run in the sixth to gain some breathing room with a 4-2 lead going into the
seventh. Sophomore pitcher Gayle Peryea was able to retire the side in the
top of the seventh to earn her first career victory on the mound for
Vermont. She improved to 1-3 on the season and struck out a career-high
seven batters this afternoon.
Carpenter and Stein each had two hits for Stony Brook. While Long drove in
three RBI and Jaime Dawson lead the Catamounts with three hits. Stebbins
and Bouffard also registered two hits in the second game for Vermont.
Vermont moves to 6-36 overall, 4-18 in America East, while Stony Brook owns
a record of 23-27 overall, 8-14 in the league. Both teams will close out
the 2002 season with another doubleheader at noon tomorrow.
