Final Stats

Irvine, Calif. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team opened the 2002 season at the UC-Irvine Classic against San Diego, and while the Seawolves' offense struggled, San Diego erupted for five goals in a 5-0 shutout victory.

San Diego (1-0) controlled the pace from the very beginning, getting off two quick shots that Stony Brook keeper Dan Ferrin swatted away. The 24th-ranked Toreros got on the board in the 15th minute, when Sy Reeves found Eric Wunderle streaking down the right side. Wunderle's shot slid past Ferrin into the far right corner for the early 1-0 lead, which remained the score heading into halftime.

San Diego tacked on four more goals in the second period despite excellent play in the goal by Ferrin, who ended up with 12 saves on the afternoon. Matt McClausland scored in the 52nd minute off a cross from Tyler Conley. Fifteen minutes later, COnley got off a shot that a diving Ferrin managed to get his hands on, but the ball bounced away and rolled into the right corner of the net. Leonel Ibarra and Ryan Coiner added goals in the last 10 minutes for the final score.

Stony Brook (0-1) failed to get a shot off the entire game, while San Diego recorded 27.

The Seawolves continue play in the UC-Irvine Classic on Monday, when they take on the host Anteaters in a 2 p.m. matchup.
