Men's Soccer Hosts Adelphi Under The Lights

Sept. 18, 2002

The Matchup: The Stony Brook men's soccer team plays in Seawolves Stadium for the first time tonight against local rival Adelphi.

Adelphi (0-5) lost to Syracuse last time out, while the Seawolves (0-5) fell to South Florida.

Series History: Adelphi leads the all-time series, 17-5-1, and defeated the Seawolves 2-0 in last year's season finale, a game that was rescheduled three times throughout the season. Marlon McEachnie tallied a goal and an assist in the win.

Scouting the Panthers: Like the Seawolves, Adelphi has struggled in the early-going against top-ranked opponents such as St. John's and Syracuse.

Sophomore midfielder Tal Sheinfeld has two of Adelphi's three goals to his credit. Senior goalkeeper Igor Yatsenko has played all 450 minutes for the Panthers, recording 31 saves while giving up 12 goals (2.40 GAA).

A New Home: The Stony Brook men's soccer team represents the first team besides football to play in brand-new Seawolves Stadium. The Seawolves will also play Saturday's game against Philadelphia and Marist on Oct. 2 in the stadium.

The stadium opened on Saturday as a sell-out crowd watched the Seawolves football team defeat St. John's 34-9 in the season opener.

Seawolves Stadium, a field turf facility, seats 8,136 and will serve as a venue for Stony Brook's football, men's and women's soccer and lacrosse teams. Other events such as high school championships will also take place in the future.

Under the Lights: Tonight's game is also the first-ever night game that Stony Brook has played at home.

Last Time Out: Stony Brook continued to struggle at the University of South Florida College Soccer Classic, falling 2-1 to Stetson and 3-0 to host USF.

Stetson won its first game of the season with the 2-1 win last Friday. The Hatters went ahead early, scoring just five minutes into the contest. However, Stony Brook quickly bounced back, tying the game five minutes later. Junior transfer Anthony Barberio scored the first goal of his Seawolves career with the equalizer off an assist from sophomore Akil Jordan. The game remained tied until the 74th minute, when freshman Alex Minton collected a deflection off a Stony Brook defender and sent it into the net for the gamewinner.

Against South Florida, the Bulls struck first with a goal in the 24th minute. Then with just three minutes remaining before halftime, USF scored again for a 2-0 edge.

Stony Brook could not manage to bounce back in the second period, and USF added to its lead in the 81st minute with a penalty kick.

Seawolves goalkeeper Dan Ferrin collected 11 saves in the loss.

Allen, Ferrin Receive Honors: Both junior keeper Dan Ferrin and sophomore defender Josh Allen were named to the USF Classic All-Tournament Team.

Ferrin totaled 16 saves in the two games combined, while Allen started both games in the back.

Streak Snapped: Holy Cross' 2-1 overtime victory on Sept. 7 marked the first time the Seawolves have lost an overtime game in three seasons.

After a 2-1 overtime setback to Oneonta in 1999, the Seawolves went 5-0-5 in overtime games before the Holy Cross loss. It also marked the first time Stony Brook lost its home opener since 1997, when Southampton defeated Stony Brook 4-1 at the Division II level.

Starting Nod: With so many new faces on this year's roster, the Seawolves have tried several different combinations, starting a different lineup in each of the five games so far this season.

The back has been the most consistent, with Rob Yturraspe, Chris Scarpati and Josh Allen starting all five games.

Payton Webb has seen every start up front, while Akil Jordan and Ivan Perez have started all five games in the midfield.

Dan Ferrin has also seen every start in the net.

News and Notes: The Seawolves have four non-conference games remaining after today--Philadelphia (Sat.,), Sacred Heart (Sept. 25), Marist (Oct. 2) and Rider (Oct. 8) . . . America East play gets underway on Sept. 28 at Vermont.
