Sept. 22, 2002

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Delaney Brown's goal off a direct kick in the 49th minute broke a scoreless tie and propelled Army to its fifth straight win with a 2-0 triumph over Stony Brook to capture the 2002 Holiday Inn Express Invitational.

In the 49th minute, Stony Brook was whistled for a foul 25 yards away from the goal. Brown prompty rifled the direct kick into the upper right hand corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Brown finished with three goals for the tournament and was named the 2002 HIE Most Valuable Player.

Stony Brook was unable to get the equalizer despite several good chances as it outshot the Black Knights 18-8 on the day. Late in the second half, Army's Emily Nay kicked a Stony Brook shot off the goal line to preserve the 1-0 advantage. Nay later helped seal the win when her corner kick found the head of Leigh Kosco who put it home for the second goal of the afternoon.

Morgan Bennett made eight saves to earn the win for Army. Lauren Kohn recorded three saves for Stony Brook (2-6) in the loss.

In the first game of the afternoon, Howard outgunned Iona 5-3 in a battle between winless teams. The Bison jumped all over the Gaels in the early going, scoring three times in the first 13:02 on goals from Sakira Cook, Karisma Horne and Ranieka Bean. Iona (0-7) began to chip away at the 18:38 mark when Shannon Nilan's blast from 22 yards out found the net to slice the lead to 3-1. Stefanie Belsito made it 3-2 before the half with a left-footed shot from the left wing in the 34th minute

Tiffany Day extended the lead to 4-2 midway through the second half but Mary O'Rourke's goal at 71:15 again drew the Gaels to within one. But it would be the Bison (1-6) who would get their first win of the season as Michelle Williston sealed the win on an assist from Victoria McLean in the 81st minute.
