The Stony Brook women's volleyball team opened its play in the 2002 Holiday Inn Express Tournament in strong fashion, posting a 3-0 win (30-16, 30-27, 30-23). The win gives the Seawolves (5-1) its fourth in a row and they continues to roll through the early part of the season. Stony Brook held a 10 kill advantage in the contest and hit .252 for the match.
Senior LaToya Byerly (Beaumont, Texas) brought home a double-double (10 kills/12 digs) in the shutout victory and sophomore Julie Zub (St. Louis, Mo.) was the catalyst in the match, assisting on 25 kills. Junior Rachel Goldsmith (Aurora, Ill.) was tied with sophomore Danielle MacKnight (Valley Stream, N.Y.) for second on the team in total kills with eight and sophomore Maria Samilo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had four. It was a team effort on the defensive side of the ball for Stony Brook, with five different players charting a block.
The Providence Friars (0-4) were done in by a poor hitting performance. Ayana Cadres had 10 kills in the lost and Katie Fleming recorded six, but the Friars overall hit .084 in the match. Susan Fanning led her team in assists (13) and Susan Fanning was tops in digs with 13.
The HIE Tournament kicked off earlier in the day with the Bucknell Bison ( 2-2) downing the St. Francis Terriers (1-5) , 3-0. The Bison's Melanie Ghiz was the overall leader in kills with 20 and Brandi Trapasso and Jennifer Wrigley teamed up to produce a total of 32 digs. Sylwia Parzych led the Terriers with nine kills in the loss and Brittany Daniel chipped in with seven.
The HIE Tournament closes tomorrow with four matches. Providence and St. Francis start the day at 10:30 a.m., then Stony Brook takes on Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. The Friars are back in action at 3:00 p.m. when they take on the Bison and the Seawolves closeout the tourney with St. Francis at 5:30 p.m.
