The men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted impressive victories over the University of Vermont Saturday afternoon in Burlington, Ver. The men (8-2) downed their opponents by a score of 148-58 and the women (5-5) swam to victory by a score of 120-105.
The men took the top spot in all 13 events they swam in Saturday. The run started when the team of Nathan French, Kyle Thornton, Matt Hanson and James Payne posted a 3:36.51 finish in the 400 medley relay. Billy Fick, Ben Abrams and James Berkowitz then swept the top three places in the 100 free, with Fick coming in first with a time of 10:55.60. Hanson then took the 200 free with his 1:50.9 finish and Edmund Freeborn kept things rolling with his top finish of 22.41 in the 50 free. French scored an individual victory in the 400 IM and Hanson notched his second first place finish of the day when he posted a 1:58.57 time in the 200 fly. Freeborn swam to the top spot with his 48.90 in the 100 free and French doubled his win total with his time of 2:01.81 in the 200 back. Thornton scored another Seawolves victory with his time of 5:03.29 in the 500 free and Kirill Alekseyev took first in the 200 breast with his 2:25.22 finish. The relay team of Dan Berzansky, Abrams, Roger Pugh and Freeborn closed the competition with a first-place time of 3:24.15 in the 200 breast.
The women duplicated the men's accomplishments by taking first in all 13 of their events on Saturday. Kim Harris, Jessica Claud, Michelle Miller and Starlyn Rupinski claimed the top spot with their 4:09.55 finish in the 200 medley relay. Erin Bowman finished with an 11:11.49 time and first place in the 1000 free while Rupinski sewed up first in the 200 free with her 2:01.18. Claud got into the solo-victory action as she took first in the 50 free thanks to her 26.23 finish and Harris scored one of her own with her time of 4:59.90 in the 400 IM. Miller continued that streak with her win in the 200 fly and Jamie Bevilacqua was tops in the 100 free with a finish of 55.26. Harris scored another win, this time in the 200 back by posting a school record time of 2:14.85. The former record was set by Nancy Whitaker and stood at 2:16.3. Sarah Doret was first in the 200 breast with her time of 2:37.75 and the team of Miller, Rupinski, Bevilacqua, and Claud finished the day with first in the 400 free relay with their time of 3:45.58.
The diving action held four more top finishes for Stony Brook. Frank Schursky took first on the one-meter board and Pat Marcel was tops on the three-meter. Erin Byrnes was first on the both the one and three-meter boards on the women's side.
Both team's are back in action Saturday as they host their final home meet of the season when the St. John's Redstorm come to University Pool. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
