One night after defeating the top team in the America East, the Stony Brook volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision Maine, the seventh place team in the league, by scores of 30-23, 30-18, 30-28, on Saturday evening at Pritchard Gymnasium. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 15-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference, while the Black Bears improved to 12-18, 3-7.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first game, but Maine rallied behind a strong effort from its blockers to come back and win 30-23. After a block by Brooke Truong and Shannan Fotter made it 5-3, Truong served four consecutive points to give the Black Bears the 7-5 lead. The Seawolves tied it at 10 several plays later, but Maine pulled away to earn the win, leading by as many as seven points.
Maine continued to dominate at the net in game two, posting 8.5 blocks to the Seawolves' three. Stony Brook hit -.179 in the game with 15 errors and just eight kills, falling 30-18.
In game three, the Seawolves battled to tie it at 24 before the Black Bears went back up a few plays later, 29-26. Stony Brook pulled back within one at 29-28 after a ball handling error and a kill by Rachel Goldsmith, but Alaina Kleparek put the game and the match away with a kill on the next play.
Brittany Howe tallied a match-high 13 kills to go with three block assists while hitting .500 for the Black Bears. Shannan Fotter added eight block assists in the win.
Goldmith collected 12 kills, while Tesha Harry added nine in the loss.
The Black Bears out blocked the Seawolves by a 13.5 to four margin on the night.
The Seawolves return to action on November 7th when they travel to take on Albany at 7:00 p.m.
