Richard Chaney hit two clutch three pointers in the final 2:26 of play to lift Utah over Stony Brook 51-48 on Sunday afternoon at the SBU Sports Complex. The Seawolves, led by D.J. Munir's 12 points, put up a valiant effort against the perennial power Utah squad but fell short to drop to 1-1 on the season. Utah extended its record to 3-0.
The Seawolves held the lead for much of the second half, taking a five point lead at 44-39 with 5:28 to play. After a timeout by Utah, Tim Drisdom connected on a three-pointer to cut the margin to two, but a Mitchell Beauford jumper put the Seawolves back up by four at 46-42 with 4:33 remaining. Chaney hit the first of his two treys down the stretch at the 2:26 mark to make it a one point game and spark a 9-0 run by the Utes to seal the victory.
Stony Brook struggled from the field in the first half, but took advantage of 10 Utah turnovers to keep within one at the break, 24-23. D.J. Munir had eight points in the first, including two three-point field goals.
Utah led by four points at 20-16 with 6:05 remaining in the half before the Seawolves went on a 7-0 run over the next 3:08 to take a 23-20 lead. A layup by Drisdom and a jumper by Tim Frost as time expired gave the Utes a one-point advantage going into the locker room.
Chaney led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown. Nick Jacobson chipped in 11 points of his own, while Drisdom dished out a game-high five assists.
Munir led the Seawolves with 12 points. Beauford recorded nine points while Cori Spencer added eight points. Mike Orfini pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
Stony Brook is back in action on Tuesday evening at Lehigh University at 7:00 p.m.
