Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook men's basketball team lost to Big Apple Basketball 82-68 on Thursday night at the SBU Sports Complex. The game served as the only exhibition contest for the Seawolves, who open up their season on November 21 when they host Dartmouth.
Turnovers hurt the Seawolves in the first half as Big Apple tallied 15 points off 16 SBU mistakes, while the home team managed just four points off 10 Big Apple turnovers.
Cori Spencer's layup at the 7:19 mark cut the Big Apple's lead to four, but the visitors followed with a 6-0 run over the next 3:50 fueled by a 3-point play by Ned Rolsma, a layup by Robert Hodgson and three Seawolves' turnovers to take the 33-23 lead. SBU cut the lead to four just under two minutes later, but Nate Brown connected on a basket as time expired to give Big Apple a 39-33 lead at the break.
Back-to-back baskets by JaJa Bey and Rolsma to open the second half pushed Big Apple's lead up to 13 at the 18:27 mark. The Seawolves rallied to cut the advantage to five two minutes later on a three pointer by D.J. Munir, but Bey responded with a three of his own to put the visitors back up by eight.
A three by Hodgson gave Big Apple its largest lead of the game at 70-52 with 7:39 to play. After two free throws by Munir, the Seawolves had the chance to cut the lead to 10 with 4:24 to play, but Gordon Hurley turned it over and Bey sunk a layup to push the lead back to 14 and put the game out of reach.
Munir led the Seawolves with game-highs of 24 points and seven rebounds to go with five assists. Spencer and J.B. Bennett each added 10 points, while Mitchell Beauford dished out eight assists in the loss.
Bey led four Big Apple players in double-figures, collecting 19 points on the night. Nii Nelson-Richards posted 12 points, while Hodgson and Nate Brown each added 10.
The Seawolves return to action on Friday, November 21 when they open up the 2003-04 season at home vs. Dartmouth. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
