Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook softball will welcome two student-athletes to the team next year, as head coach Megan Bryant announced Monday. Sara Cerrone and Jessica Greco will both join the Seawolves in the fall after signing National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.
"I am pleased that Sara and Jessica have chosen Stony Brook and the Seawolves softball program," said Bryant. "As local players who have attended our camps and clinics over the years, we know Sara, Jess and their families so well and we are excited that they will be joining us."
Sara Cerrone, a pitcher/oudfielder from Floral Park, N.Y., is a three-time All-Nassau County selection at Floral Park Memorial High School. As a junior, she hit .436 with 29 RBIs, 19 stolen bases and seven home runs. Cerrone, who is also a member of the girls basketball team at Floral Park, plays for the BP All-Stars travel team. An outstanding student, Cerrone is the Salutatorian of the Class of 2004 and will major in biology.
"Sara represents the very best of the term student-athlete," said Bryant. "She has achieved great success in the classroom and on the playing field because of her intelligence, work ethic, determination and the high goals she sets for herself. Sara is a smart player who can swing the bat and should develop into an excellent college outfielder. Her ability to pitch if needed is a plus. Having watched and worked with Sara at our camps and clinics, we know that she can be highly successful at the next level."
Jessica Greco, a catcher from Lindenhurst, N.Y., is a two-time all-league pick at Lindenhurst High School. Greco, a solid defensive catcher, also plays for the Long Island Chargers travel squad. Another solid student-athlete in the classroom, Greco earned scholar athlete honors as a junior and will major in physical therapy at Stony Brook.
"Jess was attracted to Stony Brook for the nationally acclaimed Physical Therapy Program and the opportunity to play softball for the Seawolves," said Bryant. "We first met Jess at our Pitcher/Catcher Camp a few years ago and were impressed with her potential, hustle and game smarts. I believe that she will continue to develop into a fine player as she get stronger and gains experience. Stony Brook is a great place for Jess academically and athletically and I know that she will make the most of this tremendous opportunity."
