Swimming and Diving Perform Well On First Day

The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the first day of competition at the America East conference championships Friday. The men are currently in third place behind Boston University and Binghamton. The women are currently in seventh.

The men were helped by strong performances by James Payne, Roger Pugh, Dan Berzansky and Ted Freeborn in the 200 free relay. The team took first with their time of 1:25.53. The squad made up of Nathan French, Kirill Alekseyev, Matt Hanson and Freeborn clinched second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:30.75.

Individually Freeborn was second in the 50 free with his 21.60 and Hanson was third overall in the 200 IM thanks to his 1:57.74. French also collected a third-place finish with his time of 4:45.49 in the 500 free. Patrick Marcel continued his impressive year on the one-meter board with a second place finish. Marcel tallied a score of 262.80.

Saturday's trials begin at 11 a.m. in the 400-yard Individual Medley, 100-yard Butterfly, 200-yard Freestyle, 100-yard Breaststroke, 100-yard Backstroke, and women's One-Meter Diving. Championships in those events, as well as the 200-yard Medley Relay and the 800-yard Freestyle Relay, will begin at 6 p.m.
