Final Stats

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team tallied the first win of the program's short history Sunday afternoon with a 7-6 win over the Long Island University-Brooklyn Blackbirds. Marrisa Trachtenberg was the hero for the Seawolves (1-0) as she broke a 6-6 tie with just 3:16 left in the game when she slashed through the Long Island (0-1) defense and beat the Blackbird keeper. The goal was Trachtenberg's third of the day.

The game marked the first ever for the women's lacrosse programs at both Stony Brook and Long Island University. Both schools added the sport in 2002, bringing the Seawolves' total of varsity sports to 20.

The exciting finish to the day's action matched the exciting start. The Seawolves jumped out to a 2-0 advantage when Stephanie DeGennaro and Danielle Werner both netted goals just five minutes in. The Blacksbirds would cut the lead in half when Jackie McCormick scored at the 23:40 mark. Trachtenberg again put the Seawolves up by two with her goal at 19:32, but LIU was quick to answer with a goal of their own just 36 seconds later. The two teams would go on to score two more goals before the half, leaving the Seawolves clinging to a 4-3 advantage.

The second half start was similar to the first, with DeGennaro scoring at the 27:26 mark and Trachtenberg netting her second goal of the day at 22:57. Long Island would eventually claw their way back and tie the game when Angelika Stec knotted the game at 3:32. Trachtenberg would go on to score her game winning goal just 16 seconds later.

The Seawolves travel to Washington, D.C. on March 15 to take on the Howard University Bison. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
