The Stony Brook University baseball team scored a split with the Vermont Catamounts Friday afternoon in Burlingtoin, Vt. The Catamounts (16-5/1-1) snapped the Seawolves (19-9/9-1) 11-game winning streak with a 6-2 score in the opener, but The Brook bounced back to take the second game by a score of 6-4 thanks to six extra-base hits.
Vermont used timely hitting to jump out to an early advantage in game one. Stony Brook starter Jon Lewis walked the bases loaded in the first and Vermont's Jason Carey singled to score two runs. Leif Ekelund led off in the second and Bobby Tewksbary singled him home with two outs. Barry Chamberland homered in the fifth to make it 5-0.
The Seawolves got two back thanks to a double by Lee Lipschutz that scored Nick Theoharis and Ed Kull, but the rally was halted for the 6-2 final.
Vermont broke out of the gate with two runs in the first inning of game two. After that, David Wood sat down 13 straight Catamounts while The Brook took the lead with four in the fourth. Matt Devins opened with a single off Brian Robinson before back-to-back doubles by Mike Russo and Andrew Larsen scored two runs. Ed Kull scored Larsen with a 2-run HR to left.
Matt Restivo would follow Wood and tally his third save of the season thanks to the 6-4 win. Wood was credited with the win and is 4-3 on the year. Brian Robinson (1-1) walked one and struck out nine in taking the loss .
The Catamounts and Stony Brook play another twin bill on Saturday.
