Box Score
The Vermont Catamounts tallied two wins Saturday and took the four-game series, three game to one, after defeating the Seawolves (19-11/9-3) by scores of 2-0 and 6-3. James Szwejkowski only allowed three hits for Stony Brook in game one, but the Seawolf bats fell silent and three runs from the offense in the second match up of the day were not enough to push The Brook to a win.
Strong pitching from Dereck Miller plagued the Seawolves' offense in the opener. Stony Brook's window of opportunity in the pitching dual opened in the fourth when Matt Devins singled and advanced to third on Mike Russo's long single off the right field fence. Andrew Larsen would tally a walk to load the bases but Ed Kull hit a scorching liner to third and Devins was tagged out for an inning-ending double play.
Vermont gave Miller the offense he needed in the fourth with one out as Barry Chamberland singled up the middle and went to third as the ball went to the warning track. Jay Iannoni walked and Jason Carey bunted him home. Ionnoni would score on a Stony Brook error to give the Catamounts the two runs it needed.
Vermont jumped on SBU starter Mike Restivo for three runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Jeff Barry drew a one-out walk and moved to third and would later score on a fielder's choice from Chamberland. With two outs, Carey tripled to right center and he came in on a wild pitch by Restivo.
The Seawolves took advantage of a two-out error to get two back in the second with a RBI double by Larsen that scored Rich Graham who reached on the error. UVM quickly made it 4-2 in their half as Bobby Tewksbary singled home Leif Ekelund who led with a double. The teams traded runs in the fourth with Stony Brook's Lee Lipschutz tagging his third homer of the year to cut the Vermont lead to one. In the bottom half, Ekelund's sacrifice fly made it 5-3. Chamberland closed the scoring in the fifth with his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Restivo received the loss and is 4-1 on the year after going six innings, striking out three and giving up two earned runs on five hits. Jeff Dixon pitched 2.2 innings in relief and starter Justin Bissonnette went 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits, one earned run and two K's. He is 6-0 on the year.
Stony Brook is back in action Thursday as they host Wagner at University Field at 3:30 p.m.
