The Stony Brook men's and women's swimming and diving teams were both defeated by St. John's on Saturday afternoon in Jamaica, N.Y. The women's team was downed 66-126 to drop their record to 6-7, while the men fell 88-111 and are now 7-5 on the season.
The women's team put up a valiant effort in the meet, even setting a new school record as the team of Kim Harris, Alison Porteus, Shirlee Manoogian and Jamie Bevilacqua posted a new mark in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:03.70. Harris and Bevliacqua came in second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle, while Porteus brought home first place points in the 200 breaststroke. The 200 freestyle relay team of Jessica Cervelli, Jessica Gleason, Jenny Serven and Tricia Palmeri also won first place points in the final women's event.
Nathan French led the way for the Seawolves on the men's side, finishing second in the 200 backstroke and 400 IM, and joining Kirill Alekseyev, Matt Hanson and Dan Berzansky to take home a second place finish in the 400 medley relay. Hanson also finished second in the 200 butterfly, while teammates Ted Freeborn and James Payne placed second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. The team rallied at the end of meet, as Alekseyev tallied first place points in the 200 breaststroke and Payne, Freeborn, Berzansky and Roger Pugh did the same in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Seawolves are back in action on Saturday, January 31, as both teams will host Fairfield at University Pool at 1 p.m.
