Utah's Andrew Bogut had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Utes past Stony Brook, 72-63, in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Salt Lake City. Cori Spencer led the Seawolves with 22 points while Bobby Santiago finished with 12.
A pair of free throws by JonPaul Kobryn brought Stony Brook (0-1) within 48-45 with just over 11 minutes to go, but a dunk by Bogut sparked a 10-0 run by the Utes to extend their advantage to 58-45. The Seawolves would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Spencer was a force in the paint all night long, finishing with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds on 8-for-11 shooting. Santiago added five rebounds, four assists and three steals to go along with his 12 points. Andre Vanterpool had six points, three boards and two sensational blocks off the bench.
Santiago and Mitchell Beauford kept the foul-laden Seawolves close in the first half before Spencer scored four straight points late in the stanza to get SB within 32-29 with 40 seconds to go before the break. Utah's Tim Drisdom was then whistled for a techical foul. SB squandered a chance to get within a point as Santiago missed both free thows and Utah's Marc Jackson responded with a three-pointer with six seconds to go. The Seawolves then turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, leaving 1.1 seconds on the clock. Utah executed a lob play to Bogut and the Utes went into the locker room up 37-29.
The Seawolves return to action in their home opener against Army on November 24. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
