The Stony Brook men's basketball team travels to take on Atlantic-10 foe Rhode Island on Wedensday evening. It is the first of two road games this week for the Seawolves who enter tomorrow night's action with a 3-2 mark. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on WUSB 90.1 FM.
Versus Rhode Island: This is the first meeting between the two teams.
Top Gun: Mitchell Beauford has now scored in double figures in four straight games, matching the longest streak of his short career. He has taken over the team lead in scoring at a 16 points per game average while shooting over 46 percent from the floor.
The Cori Story: With Stony Brook trailing in the first half of the Lehigh game, Spencer rallied the troops by scoring 12 of his 14 first-half points down the stretch to help SB get with 32-30 at the half. Spencer went on to record his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Pop Goes Mike: Sophomore Mike Popoko was a menace on the glass against Lehigh. He pulled down a game-high 11 boards to go along with nine points.
Stingy "D": Stony Brook's defense almost pulled off the impossible last Saturday -- holding a team without a field goal for an entire half. It took Lehigh over 18 minutes to score its first basket of the second half as SB held them to 2-for-31 shooting over the final 20 minutes.
Charity Cases: Stony Brook has been solid from the free throw line in 2004. SB has connected on over 72 percent of its free throws through the first five games. As a team, SB ranks second in the conference, trailing only Maine (.731).
Mr. Perfect: Spencer leads the charge for the Seawolves at the free throw line. He has connected on all 20 of his free throw attempts this year, the best such streak of his career. He is currently tied for first in the conference with Vermont's T.J. Sorrentine who has made his first 12 free throws of the year.
Spencer has also been good from the field, shooting 61.1 percent through the first five games.
News and Notes: SB was 0-for-5 from three-point range against Lehigh and is 6-for-26 in the last two games . . . SB currently is tied for second place in the America East . . . Jairus McCollum had six points and five rebounds against Lehigh . . . Saturday's win over Lehigh was SB's first in three tries . . . SB is 1-2 on the road this season.
