Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University men's basketball's Mitchell Beauford (Dix Hills, N.Y./Christ the King) suffered a broken right foot and will be lost for the rest of the 2004-05 season, head coach Nick Macarchuk announced.
The Dix Hills, N.Y. native injured himself late in the game against Rhode Island on Wednesday night. The team's leading scorer, Beauford totaled 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the 62-56 loss. He injured his foot while completing a three-point play that pulled Stony Brook within 52-50 with 3:27 remaining in the game.
"We are disappointed for Mitchell because he had worked so hard in the off-season physically and mentally to become a complete player," said Macarchuk. "Through the first six games, he demonstrated that he is an oustanding young player and that all of his hard work was starting to pay off."
Beauford was the team's leading scorer at 16.8 points per game and had scored in double figures in five straight games. Earlier this season, he poured in a career-high 27 points to lead Stony Brook to a win over Columbia and was later named America East Co-Player of the Week for his performance against the Lions. At the time of the injury, Beauford ranked sixth in the conference in scoring.
Stony Brook (3-3) travels to Navy on Saturday. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
