The Stony Brook softball team picked up its first win of the 2004 season with a 1-0 win over Maryland on Day 2 of the Golden Panther Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves lost their second contest of the day, falling to Michigan State 10-2 to move to 1-3 on the season.
In their first game of the day, Kristen Brust led off the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run to right field and starter Angela Andrews sent the Terripins (4-4) down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Andrews picked up her first win of the season after throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out two in the victory.
In Game 2, SB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Jane Stein, but MSU (7-3) scored twice on four consecutive singles to take the 2-1 lead in its half of the inning.
The Spartans increased their lead with a solo shot by Brittney Green in the second and a bases-loaded walk and two-run double in the third to go up 6-1. The Seawolves managed another run on an RBI groundout by Stephanie McCarthy, but MSU would tack on four more runs over the next three innings to take the 10-2 victory.
Andrews (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings of work. Katie Joosten earned the victory for MSU after allowing two runs on six hits over four innings.
Stein went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Hayley Durham went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Seawolves are back in action on Sunday for the final day of the Golden Panther Invite when they take on Maryland at 10:30 a.m.
