Softball Drops 5-1 Decision to Elon

Burlington, N.C. - The Stony Brook softball team suffered a 5-1 loss to Elon on Saturday afternoon at the Elon Phoenix Classic. With the loss, the Seawolves move to 3-11 on the season and will face Appalachian State in the consolation game Sunday at noon, while Elon improves to 18-5-1 and will battle Seton Hall in the championship.

Elon started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Paige Goss singled to right center before stealing second. Goss came around to score on an error by the Stony Brook third baseman to put Elon up 1-0.

In the third inning Meredith Miley scored on a single off the bat of Jen Massey and, with Massey at second base, Jenny Gustin smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence to put Elon ahead 4-0. Dani Concepcion's RBI single extended the Elon lead to five.

In the top of the fourth, Hayley Durham's solo shot to left field gave Stony Brook its only run of the game and put the game at the final score of 5-1.

Jen Lamb (6-0) notched the win for Elon after pitching all seven innings and striking out five batters. Sarah Hoffman (1-4) suffered the loss for the Seawolves after pitching two and 1/3 innings, striking out one and giving up five runs on four hits. Christina Voth came in to relieve Hoffman and pitched three and 2/3 innings, striking out one and allowing one hit.

In the other game of the afternoon, Seton Hall downed Appalachian State 8-0 in six innings to advance to the championship game.

Elon and Seton Hall will face off at noon on Sunday while Appalachian State and Stony Brook will battle in the consolation game, also at noon.
