Stony Brook outscored LIU 5-1 in the second half as the Seawolves topped the Blackbirds 7-3 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SB improves to 1-1 on the year, while LIU falls to 0-1.
Five minutes into play, the Seawolves got on the board first on a goal by freshman Carlee Buck. The Blackbirds (0-1) responded, scoring the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Nichole Lopez found Kayleigh Graves at the 18:44 mark. Six minutes later, a streaking Graves put the Blackbirds ahead, 2-1, off a pass from Elaine Bonilla.
Buck skipped a shot past LIU goalkeeper Amanda Childress 19 seconds before the end of the half as Stony Brook evened the contest at 2-2.
The Seawolves opened up the second half with four goals in the first nine minutes of to spring ahead, 6-2. Freshman Katie Pullen registered a goal and an assist for Stony Brook over the span.
The Blackbirds added their final tally, a free-position goal from Amy Rizzo with 15 minutes remaining to close to 6-3, but the Seawolved tacked on another goal three minutes later on a tally by Amy Taylor.
Buck led the Seawolves with two goals and an assist, while Amy Taylor added two goals and Marrisa Trachtenberg chipped in with two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Sandtorv picked up her first win in net, turning away 14 shots in the victory.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday, March 14 when they host Siena at 1:00 p.m.
