The Stony Brook softball team swept an America East Conference softball doubleheader from Vermont with a pair of victories, 8-0 and 12-3, at Archie Post Field Saturday afternoon in Burlington, Vt. Stony Brook improved to 19-21, 5-3 in conference play while Vermont slipped to 4-22-1, 1-6.
The Seawolves broke open a scoreless Game 1 with six runs in the top of the second inning. Marisa Servello ignited the rally with a lead-off double and Kristen Brust capped the scoring with a two-run home run, her ninth of the year.
Overall, five Seawolves registered multiple hits in the contest as Stony Brook pounded out 11 in the game. Servello, Brust, Hayley Durham, Laura Bradford and Jane Stein all collected two hits. Angela Andrews (12-15) picked up the win in the circle for Stony Brook, while Meghan Doonan was charged with the loss for Vermont.
In Game 2, Stony Brook took an early lead with three runs in the top of the third on a pair of RBI singles by Brust and Durham and a throwing error that plated Jamie Neuner. SB put the game away with a six-run sixth inning, taking advantage of four Catamount errors.
Sarah Hoffman (7-6) picked up the win on the mound for Stony Brook, scattering six hits and striking out six. The middle of the order did most of the damage again as Brust (2-for-3, 3 runs scored) and Durham (2-for-3) combined for four hits and seven RBIs. Neuner was 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Stony Brook will wrap up the three-game set with Vermont on Sunday at noon.
