Softball Sweeps A Pair From Marist

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team swept a pair of games from Marist Wednesday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Stony Brook edged Marist 4-3 in game one and posted a 4-2 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep. The Seawolves have now won three straight to improve to 16-19 overall.

Laura Bradford got things rolling for SB in the first inning of game one, singling to center field and then stealing second. After advancing to third on a Jane Stein single, Bradford scored on the back end of a double steal to put the Seawolves in front 1-0.

Marist reached Seawolves' starter Angela Andrews for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead 2-1. The visitors responded with a decisive two-out, three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning.

Hayley Durham walked and came around to score on a Marissa Servello double. Following a walk, Jackie Anderson singled to left to load the bases. Colleen McCarty pinch hit for Jamie Neuner and delivered a two-run single to score Servello and Sarah Hoffman to push SB ahead 4-2.

Marist bounced back with a run in the bottom of the inning but Andrews shut the door in the seventh to earn the win. Andrews went the distance, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters. Jane Stein was 2-for-4.

Stony Brook took advantage of a Marist miscue in the second inning of game two to take the early lead as a Margaret Blair single brought home Kristen Brust to put SB up 1-0. The Seawolves scored two more in the third on an RBI double by Brust and a run-scoring single off the bat of Durham to extend the lead to 3-0.

SB tacked on an insurance run in the fourth and pitcher Sarah Hoffman was touched up for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 4-2. Hoffman went the distance, going seven innings, scattering four hits and yielding only two runs.

Brust led the Seawolves offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Blair also finished with a pair of hits.

Stony Brook is back in action on Friday when it host conference foe Albany.
