Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University has been selected as one of the hosts for the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse quarterfinals, the NCAA announced last week. Stony Brook's state-of-the-art Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium will be the site of the North Region quarterfinal games on May 20, 2006. The two contests held that day will be televised live on ESPN2.
"We are thrilled to serve as a host of the 2006 quarterfinals at one of the premier lacrosse venues in the nation," said Director of Athletics Jim Fiore. "It's just another positive step in the growth and maturation of the Stony Brook athletics program and a wonderful opportunity to showcase our outstanding university on a national stage while bringing the excitement of championship lacrosse to our students, our community and Long Island."
"We're delighted that the NCAA has selected Stony Brook to host men's lacrosse tournament games in 2006," said University President Shirley Strum Kenny. "Their decision is an important recognition of our first class facilities, especially LaValle Stadium, and of the development of our athletics program."
The event will mark the first time that Stony Brook has hosted any NCAA postseason championship event since the move to Division I in 1999. Towson University will host the South Region on May 21.
"It is a credit to the leadership of our university and athletic department to be chosen to host the NCAA quarterfinals," said head men's lacrosse coach Lars Tiffany. "Their hard work and vision of success have provided the University and the community the opportunity to both host and experience the game of lacrosse at its highest level of energy and excitement. There have been so many major achievements made by the university in recent history, and acquiring the NCAA Quarterfinals is one more in the long chain of successes."
The Seawolves, who achieved their first-ever Top 20 national ranking last season, open up the 2006 season at Virginia on February 25.
