Final Stats
Jason Cappadoro tallied six points and freshman Bo Tripodi struck for two goals late in the third quarter as the No. 18 Seawolves held off Quinnipiac, 12-10, in the America East conference opener for both teams at Yale Field in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday night. The Bobcats fall to 0-6 (0-1 America East) this season, while the Seawolves improve to 5-1 (1-0 America East).
The game was a see-saw battle for most of the night and saw Stony Brook clinging to a 9-8 advantage late in the third quarter. Tripodi converted a feed from Jamey Lacey with 1:07 to go in the third to extend the lead to two and scored again 36 seconds later off an assist from Cappadoro to send SB in the final quarter with an 11-8 lead.
Sean Chamberlain's man-up goal with 5:47 to go gave SB what seemed to be a comfortable 12-8 lead but the Bobcats would not go away, getting goals from Jon D'Ascoli and Jason Barratt 26 seconds apart to cut the lead to 12-10 with 3:01 to go. But goalie Brendan Callahan made three saves down the stretch to prevent Quinnipiac from getting any closer.
Josh Murray got the Bobcats on the board just 41 seconds into the game. Stony Brook responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage. Barratt and Leigh DiPace scored consecutive goals for Quinnipiac to tie the game at three with 13:04 remaining in the second quarter.
The rest of the half was a back and forth battle, with no team enjoying a lead of more than two goals. Back-to-back goals by Adam Marksberry and Cappadoro in the final minute of the first half gave SB an 8-7 halftime advantage.
Cappadoro led the way for Stony Brook with three goals and three assists while Tripodi finished with three goals. Chris Tracey added a pair of tallies and Adam Marksberry had a goal and an assists. Callahan made 15 stops to earn his fifth win of the year.
The Seawolves resume conference play next Saturday when they host Albany. Face-off is 3 p.m.
