Box Score
Charleston, S.C. -
Isidro Fortuna's two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning sent the game into extra innings, but a wild pitch by Tom Koehler allowed the winning run to score as Stony Brook fell to the Citadel, 3-2, in 11 innings on Friday afternoon at Riley Field. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Citadel improves to 6-3.
Entering the bottom of the fourth inning deadlocked at zero, the Citadel was able to manufacture a pair of runs. Chris Swauger belted the third of three straight singles to open the inning, plating Chris Ard with a single to left field to open the scoring, before coming around to score on an RBI groundout by Matt Matulia to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Citadel held the 2-0 lead until the top of the ninth, as Matt Devins roped a one-out double down the leftfield line and came around to score on Fortuna's blast to tie the ballgame at two apiece.
Nick Abel came into the game in the bottom of the eighth and shutdown the Citadel bats until the 11th inning as he allowed a single Chris Ard and a walk Trent Weathers to start the frame. Koehler came into the game with runners on first and second to relieve Abel. The runners advanced on a groundout to second base and Blaine Richardson, a pinch runner for Altman, scored on Koehler's wild pitch.
Fortuna led the Seawolves offense, going 2-for-6 with a run and two RBI, while Devins went 3-for-5 to continue his hot start at the plate this season.
Jon Lewis threw well in a no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while fanning six in seven innings of work. Abel threw 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits, but suffered the loss.
The Seawolves play the middle game of their three-game series versus the Citadel tomorrow at 2 p.m.
