Game 1
Game 2
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Kristen Brust belted a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Stony Brook a 4-1 win over Vermont in the second game of a double header on Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves fell 3-2 in eight innings in the first game to move to 9-15 overall and 1-1 in America East play, while the Catamounts stand at 11-4 and 1-1.
In the nightcap, Jane Stein drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Rachael Vogl then reached on a fielder's choice after an attempted sacrifice bunt and Stein beat the throw to second. That brought Brust up to the plate, and she blasted a three-run shot, her league-leading ninth homer of the season, over the right field wall to give SB the 4-1 victory.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Aimee Kern, but SB answered back as Margaret Blair smashed a solo shot of her own to tie the game at one in the bottom of the fifth.
Sarah Hoffman (4-3) picked up her fourth consecutive victory after allowing one run on five hits while striking out four and walking one over seven innings of work. Sara Burke (4-3) took the loss for UVM after surrendering four runs on five hits and six walks.
In the opener, Kern tossed a one-hit gem, allowing just two unearned runs while striking out five and walking three over eight innings.
The Catamounts took a 2-0 lead after two and a half innings on an RBI single to left by Ashley Stebbins in the second and another by Kate Ramsey in the third.
The Seawolves knotted the game at two in the bottom of the sixth when Brust dropped a bloop single into shallow right field, scoring Ashley Westphal and Blair.
The game went to extra innings, and the visitors scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the eighth as Kern tripled and scored on a ground out by Samantha Chase. Stein drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the inning, but Vogl grounded out to end the game.
Angela Andrews (4-9) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits and no walks while striking out four.
The teams wrap up the three-game series on Monday at noon.
