Volleyball Opens Marist Invitational With 3-0 Sweep Of Lafayette

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - In Match 1 of the 2005 Marist Invitational, the Seawolves swept the Lafayette Leopards 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-25). The win marks the fourth straight win for Stony Brook as they improve to 4-4 on the season. The loss was only the second of the season for Lafayette who falls to 7-2.

In the opening game, Lafayette came out strong and built a seven-point lead at 15-8. Following a Morgan Sweany kill, the Seawolves rattled off six consecutive points to take a 17-16 lead. The two teams would battle back and forth to even the game at 26-26. The Seawolves turned to Melissa Votruba who came up with a big kill to end the game 30-27.

In Game 2, the Seawolves fell behind early 5-8. They would fight back to build their biggest lead of the game at 17-13. The Leopards would come as close as 22-20, before the Seawolves went on an 8-1 run to win the game at 30-21,

Stony Brook rushed out to take a 14-7 lead in Game 3. Lafayette battled back and came within three points at 28-25. Amy Oleksiej stepped up for the Seawolves, coming up with a kill to force the sideout and serving an ace to end the match.

Melissa Votruba hit .522 and a match-high 14 kills to pace the Seawolves attack. Claire Lindner led the defense with a match-high 16 digs.

The Seawolves play the host Red Foxes in Match 2 of the Marist Inivational at 5:00 p.m.
