Box Score

Bronx, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook University women's soccer team fell to Fordham University, 5-1, this evening at Jack Coffey Field in Bronx, N.Y. Fordham broke open a 1-1 halftime tie with four goals in the second half to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Seawolves fall to 0-2-1 thus far in the 2005 campaign.

The game was the first-ever match played on the new field, which was resurfaced with FieldTurf and new lights.

Fordham struck first when freshman Katie Sanchez crossed a ball to the left side of the field to connect with classmate Liane Schoenstein. Schoenstein gathered the ball and slipped it past goalkeeper Cindy Bennett into the lower right hand corner of the net with 24:45 left in the first half.

Stony Brook freshman Brooke Barbuto tied the game at one goal apiece after a terrific individual effort. Barbuto dribbled through three Ram defenders at the top of the 18 yard box before blasting a shot into the back of the net with 10:39 remaining to play in the first stanza.

Stony Brook controlled the action in the first half, outshoting the Rams, 5-2.

Fordham took the lead, 2-1, just 3:33 into the second half. After a Seawolves turnover deep in their half, Shoenstein collected the ball and lofted a ball into the upper left hand corner to notch her second goal of the match.

A Stony Brook own-goal off a corner kick at the 28:28 mark put the Rams up, 3-1. After senior goalkeeper Cindy Bennett made a terrific one-on-one save against freshman Katie Lentsch, Lentsch collected the rebound and tallied Fordham's fourth goal of the game with 22:50 to play in the game. Another Seawolf own goal with 8:49 left on the clock put the game out of reach.

Bennett made four saves on the evening, while Julie Wynns and Alessandra Cacciotti combined for seven saves to earn the victory.

The Seawolves return to action when they travel to take on Long Island University on Tuesday, September 6th. Kick-off is set for 8:00.
