Dartmouth Tops Men's Basketball, 71-50

Dec. 15, 2006

Box Score

The Stony Brook University men's basketball team was defeated by Dartmouth College, 71-50, on Thursday evening in Leedes Arena. The loss drops the Seawolves to 4-6 on the season while the Big Green improve to 2-6, winning their second in a row.

"Tonight we couldn't score, and when you can't score, you cannot win basketball games," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "We did not have the energy tonight that we would have needed to win and that shows in the final score."

The story of the game was the inability for the Seawolves to score in the first half as they managed just five field goals, shooting 5-of-23 (21%) from the field. The Seawolves trailed by just five after a Mitchell Beauford lay-up at the 13:50 mark, however, the Big Green would respond on a 13-0 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach. Stony Brook went 11:33 without a field goal in the first half before a Kyle Wright three ended SB's drought. Dartmouth went into the locker room up 12, 27-15.

It was the lowest first half output the Seawolves have put up since they tallied 16 in the season-opener last season at Villanova.

The Big Green put the game away at the start of the second half opening the stanza on a 9-0 run to go up 36-15. The Seawolves got as close as 12 after a Ryan Jones' driving lay-up with 13:00 left in the game. Dartmouth would lead by as many as 25 in the second half as they pulled away for a 71-50 decision.

Mike Popoko led 10 Seawolves who scored in the game with seven points and five rebounds. Freshman Rio Pitt tallied a career-best seven points and pulled down three rebounds in the most action he has seen as a Seawolf. Jones chipped in with seven points as well. Stony Brook's leading scorer, Ricky Lucas, failed to make a field goal in the game, going 0-8, in 18 minutes of action.

The duo of Beauford and Lucas entered the game scoring a combined 33 points per game. Tonight, the two combined for just eight, tallying four a piece.

Leon Pattman led the way for the Big Green with a game-high 26 points while teammate DeVon Mosley netted 16 points. The two combined to go 9-of-12 from downtown.

The Seawolves return to play their final home game of 2006 when they host Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, December 16. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
