Monica Myers outlasted her opponent 6-3 in the third set to clinch an opening round win for the Stony Brook women's tennis team in the America East tournament. The fourth-seeded Seawolves edged Albany, 4-3, to advance to the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Boston University.
Albany won two of the three doubles matches to jump to an early 1-0 lead with the doubles point. The duo of Hana Chovanova and Sandy Wijeratne won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles for Stony Brook.
In singles, the Seawolves won four of six matches to clinch the come from behind victory. Wijeratne cruised at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, Erica Federgreen won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4, Victoria Vovsha won at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4 and Myers clinched the win with the three-set victory at No. 4, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
The Seawolves return to action for their America East semifinal match against Boston University tomorrow afternoon. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 P.M.
