Baseball Falls to No. 24 Winthrop, 14-3

Winthrop scored 11 runs in the third inning as the Stony Brook baseball team fell to Winthrop, 14-3 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Seawolves fall to 15-21 on the season.

With a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Winthrop bats exploded for 12 hits and plated 11 runs to seize control of the ballgame.

The Seawolves notched their first run of the contest in the fifth, when Rob Leonard led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Chris DiBiaso ground out. DiBiaso tallied his second RBI of the day when he singled in Isidro Fortuna in the top of the sixth.

Keith Fier singled in Stony Brook's final run of the contest in the eighth, when the shortstop singled in Tom Pennino who doubled earlier in the frame.

Tom Koehler (3-3) shouldered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings of work. Pennino finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored, Leonard was 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run scored and DiBiaso was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Seawolves conclude their series with Winthrop on Sunday at 2:00 P.M.
