Baseball Edged By No. 24 Winthrop, 5-4

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Stony Brook baseball team was edged, 5-4, by No. 24 Winthrop on Sunday afternoon. Winthrop plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the two-game sweep. The loss drops Stony Brook to 15-22 on the season.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Chris DiBiaso led off the inning with a solo shot over the left-field fence. Winthrop responded in the bottom of the frame, when Heath Rollins delivered the RBI double to tie the game up at 1-1.

Winthrop gained a 2-1 advantage off of a Bryan Henderson single in the fourth, but Stony Brook scored a run in the fifth when Rob Leonard crossed the plate on a fielder's choice and one in the sixth when Isidro Fortuna hit a solo homerun to regain the lead at 3-2.

The Eagles recaptured the lead in the seventh inning when they took advantage of two walks and a Stony Brook error to make the score 4-3.

Down to their final out of the game, Brian Witkowski singled in Keith Fier to knot the game up at 4-4. Winthrop, however, answered in the bottom of the ninth when Jacob Dempsey hit a sacrifice fly to plate Rollins and secure the sweep.

Gary Novakowski (3-2) picked up the loss for Stony Brook, allowing one run in 2.0 innings of work. Witkowski finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with an RBI, Fortuna was 2-for-4 with a homerun and Leonard finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday when they host Fairfield for a 3:30 P.M. contest.
