The Stony Brook women's tennis season began this weekend with the Eastern Women's Intercollegiate Championships. Through one day of play, Sandy Wijeratne advanced in the No. 2 flight singles draw and the duo of Monica Myers and Shaina Murugan advanced in the No. 2 singles flight.
In the No. 1 singles draw, Paola Rodolfi, in her first tennis match as a Seawolf, fell to Daisey Ames of Brown, 6-3, 6-2. Wijeratne advanced in the main draw of the No. 2 singles flight as she outlasted Nadja Sein of Seton Hall, 7-6, 4-6, 10-4. Erica Federgreen was a winner over Heather Tettlebach of Marist, 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Kelly LaRusso of Connecticut, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles bracket. In the No. 4 singles draw, Victoria Vovsha was edged by Stephanie LaFortune of West Virginia, 6-4, 2-6, 5-10.
In the No. 1 doubles draw, the duo of Caitlin Crowley and Victoria Vasile fell to Aimee Kern and Kim Westcott of Albany, 4-8. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Murugan and Myers cruised with an 8-1 win over the Providence team of Jennifer Cusak and Dara Hawkins.
