Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Tom Koehler threw 8.0 shutout innings and the Seawolves plated five runs in the first as the Stony Brook baseball team shutout Vermont, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at University Field. Koehler struck out nine as the Seawolves improve to 26-20 overall and 11-5 in America East play. Vermont falls to 19-23, 8-8.
The Seawolves opened up a 5-0 lead after they plated five runs off of four hits in the bottom half of the first. Stony Brook loaded the bases with nobody out after Michael Stephan drew a walk following back-to-back singles from Brian Witkowski and Chris Sipp. Rob Leonard ripped an RBI single to left to plate Witkowski and Sipp to hand the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.
Rob Dyer followed with another Stony Brook single to load the bases again. After Chris Cruz was hit by a pitch to plate Stephan, the Seawolves grounded into a double play to score Leonard and increase the Seawolf lead to 4-0. Stony Brook capped its scoring in the first on the next play when Dyer scored on a Catamount error as the Seawolves led 5-0 after one.
This was all the run support that Koehler (4-7) needed as the junior hurler scattered nine hits over 8.0 innings and struck out nine as he held the Catamounts scoreless.
The Seawolves added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth when Steven Mazzurco hit an RBI single to plate Dyer and later scored on a Vermont error.
Mazzurco finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Leonard was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Dyer finished 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they host Vermont for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
