Stony Brook Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Vermont

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook baseball team extended its winning streak to four as the Seawolves swept a doubleheader over Vermont on Saturday afternoon at University Field. Behind a complete-game win from Gary Novakowski the Seawolves won Game 1, 4-1, and behind a 17 hit explosion the Seawolves won Game 2, 13-4. Stony Brook improves to 28-20 overall and 13-5 in America East play. Vermont falls to 19-25, 8-10.

In Game 1, the Seawolves plated four runs in the bottom half of the third inning to open up a 4-0 lead. Chris Cruz led off the frame with a solo blast to left and Rob Leonard capped the inning with an RBI single to plate Michael Stephan.

Vermont finally got to Novakowski, Stony Brook's Game 1 starter, when Nate Matusik hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth. Novakowski (5-1) closed the game out for his fifth win of the season. The junior hurler struck out four and allowed only one run in the complete game win.

In Game 2, the Seawolves, already leading 6-1, broke the game open with a seven run fifth. Steve Mazzurco got things started with a one-out solo shot over the left field fence. Mazzurco, in his second at-bat in the frame, capped the scoring with a two-out double to left to plate Michael Tansey as the Seawolves scored five runs with two outs and led 13-1 through five.

Vermont rallied to plate three runs in the top of the sixth, but Matt Harloff threw 2.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen as Stony Brook topped Vermont in Game 2, 13-4.

Jon Kalkau (7-0) struck out seven in 5.0 innings on the hill. Chris Sipp finished Game 2, 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Justin Echevarria was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Mazzurco was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and Brian Witkowski was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Seawolves will wrap-up their series with the Catamounts on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
