Women's Tennis Competes at Eastern Collegiate Invitational

West Point, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's tennis team opened up its fall season season with the Eastern Collegiate Invitational hosted by Army. Stony Brook competed in singles and doubles on Friday.

Claudia Sanua (Bryanston, South Africa) competed at first singles for the Seawolves and advanced to the quarterfinal of the consolation round where she will face Sarah Mayer of Siena, tomorrow afternoon. At second singles, Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) had a great day, winning both of her matches in straight sets and advancing to the quarterfinals where she will face Natalia Prinz of West Virginia.

At third singles, Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won her first match in straight sets but fell in the round of 16. At fourth singles and seeded first, Sandy Wijeratne (Dubai, U.A.E.) won her first match in straight sets before falling in the next round. Wijeratne came back in the consolation, winning her first match and will face Patty Volmer of Army in the Quarterfinals.

After a bye in the first round, Shaina Murugan (Manalapan, N.J.) defeated Gabi Furdyna of UMBC and will face Monique Burton of West Virginia in the Semifinals. The first doubles team of Brooke Flanigan (Melbourne, Australia) and Victoria Vovsha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) won their first match but fell in the round of 16.

Day 2 of the Eastern Collegiate Invitational continues tomorrow.
