Volleyball Drops Close Match To Maine, 3-2

Orono, Maine - Down two sets to one, Maine's volleyball team rallied to defeat Stony Brook, 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 21-25, 14-16), Friday night in Orono, Maine. Three different Seawolves registers double-digit kills, led by senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) who had 23. With the loss Stony Brook falls to 9-13 (0-4 America East) while Maine improves to 8-10 (1-3).

Stony Brook came out red hot, opening a 7-2 lead early on in set one. Maine did rally to pull within five at 16-11, but the Seawolves offense was too much to handle. Dikecligil had a team-high five kills in the set, while junior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Arizona) had four.

Maine turned the tables on Stony Brook in the second set, jumping out to an early lead. No Black Bear recorded more than three kills, but the team registered a .414 hitting percentage as they cruised to a 25-18 win.

Maine kept the momentum going into the third set, as a kill form Amanda Armstrong gave them a 14-9 lead. Stony Brook rallied back, going on a 10-3 run to pull ahead 19-17 on a kill from sophomore Ashley Headen (Hamilton, Va.). Maine tied the game at 20, but Stony Brook finished it out on a 5-2 run to put the set away.

The final two sets both opened with Stony Brook grabbing early leads. In the fourth, a kill from senior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.) put the Seawolves up 16-13, before Maine went on a 12-5 run to force a fifth set. The Seawolves opened an 8-6 advantage in that set, before Maine mounted its comeback. After tying the score at 14, the Black Bears received back-to-back kills from Laura Goettsch and Brittany Kiehl to finish the match.

Stony Brook's next match is Sunday at 1pm when they face New Hampshire.
