Behind 11 kills and 10 digs from Ashley Oscars, UMBC swept Stony Brook University's volleyball team, 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-19), Friday night. With the loss, Stony Brook drops to 12-17 (3-8 America East) while UMBC moves to 17-12 (6-5).
The Seawolves had a strong start to the match, scoring the first three points. The scoring started with a block by sophomore Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) and senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey), followed by a kill from freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) and an ace from junior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.). The Retrievers slowly chipped away at Stony Brook's lead, tying the set at 11-11 on a kill from Bridget Sheetz. UMBC then scored the next four-straight points to open a 15-11 advantage. Stony Brook rallied back, pulling within two at 18-16 on another ace from Gibbs, only to have UMBC reopen their lead 21-17.
Trailing, 24-21, it was Gibbs who once again pulled the Seawolves back into the game with back-to-back kills, moving the score to 24-23. On their third set point of the frame, the Retrievers managed to put the set away as another kill from Scheetz gave them the 25-23 win.
UMBC rode the momentum of the opening win to a decisive second set victory, 25-10. The Retrievers opened the frame scoring 12 of the first 15 points and held the Seawolves to just four kills for the entire set.
Stony Brook bounced back quickly, starting off the third frame with a 3-1 lead, receiving two kills from Dikecligil. Another run by UMBC though put the Seawolves down 8-4. Stony Brook did not go away easily, pulling within three at 18-15, but that would be as close as they would come, eventually falling 25-19.
Stony Brook will play its final match of the 2008 season on Sunday when they travel to play Albany. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
