Nov. 9, 2008

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Led by a game-high 15 kills from Lindsay Allman, the University of Maine beat Stony Brook's volleyball team, 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 26-24), on Sunday afternoon in Pritchard Gymnasium. With the loss the Seawolves drop to 12-16 (3-7 America East) while Maine improves to 13-12 (6-5). This was the final home match for seniors Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.) and Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey), who were honored prior to the start.

Stony Brook was slow out of the gates, falling behind 7-2 before rallying to pull within three at 9-6 on a kill from sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.). That would be as close as the Seawolves would get, however, as Allman and Laura Goettsch both racked up five kills on the way to a 25-17 win.

The second set was tight at the start, with the Seawolves cutting Maine's lead down to one at 6-5 with a kill from Graham. The Black Bears would score five of the next points, capped by a kill from Margaret Page, to open a five-point advantage. The lead was still five when a kill from Dikecligil kick-started the Seawolves offense at 20-15. Stony Brook scored six straight points and eventually tied the set at 23-23 on a kill from Graham. Once again though, the combination of Goettsch and Allman proved too much, as they converted back-to-back kills to hold on to a 25-23 victory.

The final frame was an epic back-and-forth battle with neither team managing to grab more than a two-point lead at point in the match. Graham and Dikecligil both had four kills in the set with neither recording an error. Trailing 24-23, sophomore Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) converted her third kill of the day to knot things up at 24-24. Goettsch answered right back with a kill of her own and an attack error by the Seawolves eventually gave Maine the game, 26-24.

Stony Brook has two more matches on its schedule, both being on the road. The Seawolves will travel to UMBC this Friday for a match at 7:00 p.m. before closing out the season at Albany on Sunday.
