Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Freshman point guard Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) has been named the America East Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. The 6-1 point guard averaged 16.3 points per game last week, leading the Stony Brook men's basketball team to victories over New Jersey Tech, Lehigh and Mount Ida College.
Dougher opened the week with a career-high 24 points in the victory over NJIT on Tuesday, going 5-for-6 from three-point range. The 24 points against the Highlanders were the most by a Seawolves freshman since SBU joined Division I in the 1999-2000 season and the five three-pointers were the most by an SBU freshman since Bobby Santiago also knocked down five on December 2, 2002 against Rhode Island. Dougher then came back to tally 13 points and a season-high eight rebounds in the victory over Lehigh on Friday before registering 12 points, four assists and four steals in the win over Mt. Ida on Sunday.
The Scotch Plains, N.J. native is currently averaging a team-high 11.5 points per game for the Seawolves who are off to their best start, 5-3, since the 2002-03 season. Winners of four straight games, SBU has now claimed the conference's Rookie of the Week award in three of the four weeks it has been given this season.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, hosting Long Island rival Hofstra at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
