Burlington, VT. - Freshman Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning and senior Gary Novakowski (Prospect, Conn.) hurled a five-hitter to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 2-1 victory over the Vermont Catamounts in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Field. Kyle Massie went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Vermont to a 5-2 win in game two. With the split, Stony Brook goes to 19-15 overall and 7-4 in the conference while the Catamounts go to 16-13 and 4-3.

The teams entered the seventh inning of game one tied at 1-all but junior Chad Rebecca (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) singled to lead off, moved to third with two outs and then came home on a Marshall RBI single. Novakowski then retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to finish off his five-hitter. The right-hander struck out two while walking just one to pick up the victory.

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the third as Rebecca was hit by a pitch to lead off, moved to second on a wild pitch and then to the third on a groundout before coming home on a RBI groundout from freshman Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.). Vermont came back to tie it in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Massie.

Massie gave Vermont the early lead in game two with an RBI triple, driving in Jeff Nolet who walked to lead off. The Seawolves tied it in the fifth as junior Brian Witkowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) doubled with one out and then came home on a RBI double from sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y.).

But the Catamounts regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on two-run single from Matt Duff and then added two more in the sixth on a two-run triple from Massie. The Seawolves added a run in the seventh as Witkowski tripled and then scored on a Marshall sacrifice fly. But Vermont starter Keith Rakus then retired sophomore Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) on a fly out to left to complete his five-hitter.

Junior Mike Errigo (Bayside, N.Y.) took the loss for Stony Brook, allowing five runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings. Witkowski led the Stony Brook offense going 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

The teams wrap up the four-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
