Playing in the first round of the America East Women's Tennis Championship, Stony Brook University's squad advanced to the semifinals this afternoon when the fourth-seeded Seawolves knocked off No. 5 seed Albany, 4-0. Junior Erica Federgreen (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Claudia Sanua (Bryanstron, South Africa) each won a pair of matches to help Stony Brook to the win.
Senior Sandy Wijeratne (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) got things started for Stony Brook (8-7), winning their No. 2 doubles match by an 8-2 score. Sanua and Federgreen followed with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles and Stony Brook had its first point.
Sanua kept the Seawolves on a roll in singles play, picking up another point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Susan Ma. Stony Brook then picked up two more straight sets victories to claim the match. At No. 5 Federgreen scored a 6-4, 6-4 win over Laine Mackey while senior Victoria Vovsha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) held off Amanda Hall, 6-3, 7-5. With Stony Brook already having enough points for the win the other three singles matches were not finished.
Stony Brook will now face No. 1 seed Boston University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a semifinal match at the Yale Tennis Center. The winner will advance to the conference championship match on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
