New Haven, Conn. -
Stony Brook's women's tennis saw its season come to a close yesterday when top-seeded Boston University handed fourth-seeded Stony Brook a 4-0 setback in a semifinal match at the America East Conference Championships.
Stony Brook's No. 2 doubles team of senior Sandy Wijeratne (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay) picked up a win, taking an 8-4 win over Danielle Abraham and Cori Lefkowith. But Boston University took the other two doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores to win the first point of the match.
Things did not go Stony Brook's way in singles play, where Boston University won the matches at Nos. 1, 3 and 6 before the Seawolves could put a point on the board. The closest of the three matches that were finished was at No. 6 where senior Victoria Vovsha (Forest Hills, N.Y.) dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Abraham. Wijeratne was up a set in her match at No. 3 with Yana Sadovskaya and sophomore Claudia Sanua (Bryanston, South Africa) was also in a close one at No. 2 against Vanessa Steiner, but with the outcome of the match already decided, their contests were not finished.
