Providence, R.I. -
Stony Brook University's volleyball team rallied late, but still fell to Brown, 3-2 (25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 22-25, 16-14) Friday night at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I. Four different Seawolves had double-digit kills, led by senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) who totaled 20. Brown improves to 5-1 on the season while Stony Brook falls to 4-8.
Junior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz) recorded her first double-double as a Seawolf with 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomores Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) tallied 13 and 11 kills respectively. Junior Jamie Watson (New City, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 14 digs, while freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) had 53 assists.
Brown jumped out to an early lead in set one and never let down as they cruised to a 25-18 win. The Bears were led by Megan Toman who recorded seven kills with a .700 attack percentage.
While the second set ended with a similar score, 25-19, it was much tighter throughout. Stony Brook tied the score at 10 on a Headen kill and held a brief lead after a Brown attack error. The Seawolves struggled offensively though, recording a team attack percentage of just .065 for the set as the Bears ran off a 15-9 streak to close out the frame.
Brown took early control of set three with a 7-4 lead before Stony Brook answered with five straight points, highlighted by three kills from Headen. Brown rallied back with a 10-6 run, capped by a Danielle Vaughan kill. The Seawolves bounced right back though, led by Dikecligil's ten kills and .833 attack percentage, to pull out a 25-20 victory.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle, eventually being tied at 22 after a put-away by Doremus. Senior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.) followed that with a kill of her own to give the Seawolves the lead. A Brown timeout did not slow down the Seawolves, who finished the set with a Dikecligil ace followed by another Doremus kill.
Stony Brook opened the deciding match on a 5-3 run, led by two kills from Nelson. It looked like Stony Brook would complete the come-from-behind win when a Brown attack error gave them a 13-10 lead. However, back-to-back kills by Lyndse Yess and a Stony Brook attack error evened the score at 13 all. Yess recorded two more kills down the stretch as Brown finished the match with a 16-14 win.
Stony Brook has two matches tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m. against Bryant.
