Stony Brook, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's volleyball team swept Xavier, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-22), Friday night during the Stony Brook Volleyball Invitational. Senior Gulce Nazli Dikecligil (Istanbul, Turkey) led the Seawolves once again with 18 kills. With the victory, Stony Brook improves to 7-9 while Xavier falls to 5-7.
Sophomore Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) also registered double-digit kills for Stony Brook, finishing with 12. Both Nelson and Dikecligil registered attack percentages of .500. Junior Michelle Burrola (Glendale, Ariz.) paced the Seawolves with 14 digs while freshman Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) dished out 38 assists.
Stony Brook opened the first set red hot, jumping out to an 8-3 lead while receiving aces from both senior Jessica Graham (Eastport, N.Y.) and junior Lisa Doremus (Glendale, Ariz.). A Xavier timeout did not slow down the Seawolves one bit as they continued to pour it on, led by Dikecligil's six kills. The Musketeers were never closer than four points, as Stony Brook took the starting frame, 25-16.
Xavier grabbed an early lead in set two and maintained it throughout most of the frame. Trailing 15-10 after a kill by Kathryn Traut, the Seawolves rattled off four straight to pull within one and tied the set three points later at 16 with a kill from junior Jamie Watson (New City, N.Y.). An attack error by the Musketeers gave Stony Brook the lead and they never relented, holding off a late Xavier push, to win the second set 25-22.
The Seawolves wasted no time in the final set, scoring the first five points, two coming off aces from Dikecligil. Xavier battled back, however, eventually taking a 16-14 lead on a Stony Brook attack error. The Seawolves did not fold though, taking the lead back at 18-17 on another kill from Dikecligil. Stony Brook outscored Xavier 7-5 the rest of the way to hold onto a 25-22 win.
The Stony Brook Invitational continues Saturday morning, with the first match starting at 10:00 a.m. when Xavier takes on Saint Francis (PA). Stony Brook will play twice tomorrow, facing Brown at noon and then Saint Francis (PA) at 4:00 p.m.
